Official Opening of The Norman Thomas Lounge
The Chairman addressed the Friday Hotpot Lunch gathering.
“Before we have our hotpot I have a very important and pleasant duty to perform.
As many of you know we received a very generous and substantial donation from the estate of Norman Thomas kindly given to the Club by Norman’s partner Audrey.
Norman, known to many of us here today, but for those who didn’t know him, he was a true gentleman. He was a great friend to the Club and supported many of the various projects and activities undertaken by the Club.
He was also an example to us all. He lost part of his arm in an accident when he was quite young but this didn’t stop him enjoying life to the full. Even with his disability he played bowls and snooker to very high standards never complaining or moaning about life’s injustices. He would come to the Club most afternoons and enjoyed the company of his many friends.
He became the official tea maker for the afternoon crew and for the A team in the St Helen’s Pensioners League. He was still making the tea well into his 90’s. He wouldn’t let anyone else perform this task when he was around and he was selfless in his support and passion for the Club and his friends.
As a reminder of Norman’s generosity we have used part of his gift to purchase a new giant TV. The remainder of his gift will go into general funds to help with some of our planned major projects.
As a constant reminder of Norman and Audrey’s generosity we are naming the TV room ‘The Norman Thomas Lounge’. Can I now ask Audrey to officially unveil the plaque.”
