President’s Day, 2nd June 2018
The clubhouse was set out and the grounds were looking in pristine condition in readiness for our most prestigious event of the year, President’s Day and Final of the Dewar Cup bowling competition. They only thing missing was the glorious weather we have been enjoying for the past week. The morning was miserable with light drizzle falling right up 1pm. There was a break in the drizzle and Ian Gerrard switched No1 green to remove the fine film of water from the grass surface. The green was looking perfect and the weather started to look a little more promising.
Jeff Lawrenson greeted guests and each group had their photo taken by our own Frank “Gadget Man” Royston on arrival. At the appointed time, our President, Eric Henderson and his lady, Pauline, greeted and welcomed members and their guests as they entered the lounge.
When all had gathered in the clubhouse, the Chairman welcomed the President, his lady Pauline and their guests, the Dal Ferro family, and thanked them for sponsoring Presidents Day again, and members and their guests.
Before introducing Jeff Lawrenson, the Chairman congratulated Glyn Moses, our steward for over 20 years, a distinguished Saints player and a British Lion on celebrating his 90th birthday during the week. Members and their guests gave Glyn a tumultuous round of applause.
Jeff Lawrenson then gave a speech into the history and background of the Dewar Cup and the Dal Ferro family involvement through Les Middleton, a long-standing member who had supported the club for many years and continues to do so with the family sponsorship of President’s Day. Jeff mentioned that Kathryn Gee had again made the semi-finals of the competition. Mrs Barbara Dal Ferro was then invited to make the draw for the semi-finals. Kathryn Gee would play Jeff Carlisle and Mark Winstanley would play Jeff Lawrenson.
The proceeding then moved outside where the weather was holding and the semi-finals commenced. We saw some excellent bowling from all players but the eventual winners were Kathryn Gee and Jeff Lawrenson progressing to the final. Could this be the year we had a lady President’s Day champion?
The final started and we were treated to some excellent bowling from both players. Jeff demonstrated his “ale house” bowling technique on several occasions that on the day proved very effective. Jeff ran out as the eventual winner of a hard fought very entertaining match. Well-done Jeff.
Mrs Barbara Dal Ferro was then invited to present the Dewar Trophy to Jeff. Mr President then presented the prizes to the winner, runner up and the losing semi-finalists. He congratulated them on a fine demonstration of bowling skills. That concluded the bowling proceedings. We then returned to the clubhouse for a super buffet and some well deserved liquid refreshment.
Rob Gerrard then invited Mr President to make his formal address. He gave a very sincere speech were he thanked his good lady for her support and for her hard work in preparing all the beautiful table flower arrangements. He also thanked Ian Gerrard and the garden gang for their hard work in preparing the grounds to a very high standard and those who had helped to prepare the room for the event. He also thanked Linda and Jayne for the buffet and their support. He concluded by thanking all for coming and he hoped everyone had enjoyed the day. He received a warm round of applause from all.
The Chairman then presented flower arrangements to Mrs Barbara Dal Ferro and Mrs Pauline Henderson. The ladies raffle concluded the day’s proceedings.
After a very uncertain start to the morning we were blessed with a rain free afternoon, which made the day most enjoyable. It is always great to see the club full of our members and their guests enjoying themselves. It was also great to see Andrea paying us a visit and see her looking so well after her illness. We look forward to welcoming her back again soon. Thank you to all those members who help and support the Board in making this a unique club. Last, but by no means least, thank you to all our members for your continued support.
