The players were gathered in anticipation of a good day’s bowling. The sun was shining and the greens running fast. The players were divided into four groups and were to play four games with a different partner for each game. The score for each game was given to each player in each team. The winner from each green would be the individual who had won the most games. In the event of a draw the aggregate score would determine the winner from each green.
We saw some excellent bowling on very tricky greens. On green 1, there were two players who had won 3 games and drawn 1. Jeff Lawrenson was declared the winner on a point’s difference of 1 over runners up Helen Lawrenson/Phil Millington. On green 2, Joan Armstrong won 3 games and drew 1. Two players won 3 games, Barbara Burns and Pat Ashcroft. Barbara had the better aggregate score.
So, the winners of the J&J Spottiswood Memorial Shield were Joan Armstrong and Jeff Lawrenson. The runners up were Helen Lawrenson/Phil Millington and Barbara Burns.
At the half way stage the players retired to the bar for some well-earned liquid refreshment and the buffet lunch, kindly sponsored by Jan Spottiswood, who, unfortunately, couldn’t be with us on the day.
All had a great day and we thank Jan for her very generous sponsorship of this annual competition.
