President’s Day, 1st June 2019
The clubhouse was set out, with some superb floral decorations, and the grounds were looking in pristine condition in readiness for our most prestigious event of the year, President’s Day and Final of the Dewar Cup bowling competition. The weather was holding up and everything was ready for a great afternoon’s bowling followed by the President’s Day buffet.
Members and guests were greeted on arrival and had their photograph taken by Frank Royston. The President, Bernard Graney, and his lady, Jean, greeted and mingled with members and guests and invited them to join them in a glass of champagne.
At the appointed time, the Chairman welcomed the President, his lady, Jean, and their guests, he welcomed the Dal Ferro family, unfortunately due to a prior arrangement Barbara Dal Ferro couldn’t join us, however, he thanked the family for their continued sponsorship of President’s Day and their support, and finally he welcomed members and their guests.
Jeff Lawrenson then gave a short history and background of the Dewar Cup and the Dal Ferro family involvement through Les Middleton, a long standing member who had supported the club for many years. Jeff then invited Alistair and Jason Dal Ferro to make the draw. The semi-finals were between Pat Ashcroft and Jeff Lawrenson and John Burrows and Phil Millington. Pat had brought her own band of supporters all waving banners to calm her nerves and in support of her efforts. Nice touch! Jeff and John progressed to the final. We saw some excellent bowling from both players in what turned out to be a very entertaining and hard fought match with Jeff running out as the eventual winner, 21-18. Well done Jeff in retaining your title.
Alistair Dal Ferro was then invited to make the presentation of the Dewar Cup. Prizes were presented to the semi-finalists, the runner up and winner. Mr President congratulated the bowlers on a fine display of bowling skills. That concluded the bowling proceedings. We then returned to the clubhouse for a excellent buffet and some well-deserved liquid refreshment.
Rob Gerrard then invited Mr President to make his formal address. He gave a very sincere speech where he thanked Dennis Glynn and Wally Ashcroft as two term Presidents, and others for their very good advice before he accepted the role of President. He also thanked those who had made the day such a memorable occasion, for him and Jean, in preparing the clubhouse and grounds. He thanked Linda and her team for preparing the buffet and for looking after us. He thanked the board for inviting him to be President and the work it does in support of the club.
Mr President then referenced Wally Ashcroft’s project to improve the kitchen facilities. He had discussed with Jean a project that would leave a lasting legacy of his presidency and they had decided on a project to replace the furniture in the clubhouse. This would be quite an expensive project, so Mr President and Jean had decided to set the project running with an extremely generous and unexpected donation of £5,000. Mr President then invited members to support the project with their own donations. He concluded by thanking all for coming and he hoped everyone had enjoyed the day. He received a warm round of applause from all.
The Chairman then presented flower arrangements to Mrs Jean Graney and through the Dal Ferro family to Mrs Barbara Dal Ferro. The ladies raffle concluded the day’s proceedings.
After an uncertain start to the morning we were blessed with a rain free afternoon, which made the day most enjoyable. It is always great to see the club full of our members and their guests enjoying themselves. Thank you to all those members who help and support the Board in making this a unique club. Last, but by no means least, thank you to all our members for your continued support.
